There have been many books written recently on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrates sixty years as Sovereign in June with magnificent Diamond Jubilee Celebrations throughout the country and the Commonwealth .
Let’s have a closer look at some of the books that are available and what they introduce to the reader.
“The real Elizabeth” by Andrew Marr, charts the Queen’s development from a child to her current position as an experienced monarch. The book was especially written by Andrew Marr to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Andrew Marr has a fine pedigree, having been editor of the Independent newspaper for two years and political editor of the BBC news from 2000 to 2005. He has presented a number of history programmes on the making of modern Britain, on TV and is the author of at least three books. I have no doubt that any information presented in this book, some of which comes from quite senior sources within the palace, is accurate and should provide the reader with an informed account of what the Queen is really like both in public and private. If you are going to buy just one book, then this may be the one.
“Queen Elizabeth II: A Diamond Jubilee Souvenir Album” by Jane Roberts. This is what I would refer to as a coffee table book- a volume that your visitors would want to dip into just to view the photographs that chart the development of the Queen from a child to monarch. There are over 300 photographs many of which have not been published before and they will provide a unique history of our monarch. This book is written by Jane Roberts who is the Librarian at Windsor Castle, where she lives in a Grace and Favour apartment at Frogmore House. The Hon. Lady Roberts has been the Royal librarian since 2002. She is the author of a number of books mainly around Royal subjects. Debretts lists Lady Roberts’s hobbies as Singing, piano playing and sewing.
"Elizabeth the Queen: The life of a modern monarch" by Sally Bedell Smith. This book, published in January 2012 by an American author was written just in time for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee. Sally Bedall Smith has written a number of biographies of twentieth/twenty first century icons, including the Kennedys. The Los Angeles times says that the author has interviewed over 200 people some staff and some inner circle- it describes a woman who is” symbolically regal but personally modest”. There is a handy notes section in the back of the book if you need to check the origin of the comment.
“Her Majesty: The Court of Elizabeth II”, by Robert Hardman who is now a journalist with a leading British Newspaper, the Daily Mail. This book is to be published on April 1st 2012. Robert Hardman is a leading writer on Royalty and uses his skill and contacts within the Royal family and household. Mr Hardman has interviewed members of the family and interviewed Prince Charles for a TV special of the Prince at 60. Last year he published another book on the Queen, entitled, Our Queen in which he assesses how the Queen has adapted to her ever changing role within the twentieth/twenty first centuries.
"Prince Phillip: The turbulent early life of the man who married Queen Elizabeth II-" by Phillip Eade. Prince Phillip had a difficult childhood by any account but met, fell in love and married the princess who became a Queen. Many observers would suggest that he is her rock and comfort and that she could not have performed so well without his reassuring presence. This book tells about the Prince’s childhood and how he managed to captivate the Queen when they first met and she was aged just 13 years. Phillip Eade read History at Bristol and has had a varied career from English teacher to Criminal Barrister. This is his second book, his first " Sylvia Queen of the Headhunters," about the white rajah’s in India was well received.
"Sixty Glorious Years: Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012" by Victoria Murphy. This book is due to be released in March 2012. It is written by Victoria Murphy who works for a popular British Newspaper “The Mirror”. Ms Murphy reported extensively on last year’s Royal Wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton.
"Queen Elizabeth II and her Church: Royal Service at Westminster Abbey", by John Hall who is the Dean of Westminster. This book is not yet available, being published in May but is available for pre order. In this book the Dean considers the content of recent Royal Services and how they are regarded by the Royal Family.
"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: Diamond Jubilee Souvenir 1952-2012" by Annie Bullen . Another new book, not published until 1st June 2012. This book promises to be a “gorgeously photographed celebration”, showing the Queen both “on” and “off” duty. The author Annie Bullen has also written about the wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton.
These are just a few of the books that I have selected, available from Amazon. If you order a book before it is printed they will agree a despatch date and, if the book is priced higher than the amount you placed your order at, you get it at the lower price. The good news is that if the book is cheaper than the amount that you placed your order at , you get a refund of the difference. Good news all around!!

Hi, These books are really interesting, I think the one about Prince Philip would be interesting to me, because I have often been confused about his background, great intro for anybody who wants to find out about the Royal Family especially this year! And I am still waiting for Kate to get pregnant, I think she is waiting for the Queen to have her Jubilee first!
